The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is seeking a highly motivated Proteomics Scientist to join the Proteomics Core Facility at our Heidelberg site. Our facility provides cutting-edge scientific support in mass spectrometry-based proteomics and structural biology to EMBL scientists and external academic groups worldwide. We offer comprehensive services for the characterization and quantification of proteins and peptides using state-of-the-art mass spectrometers, such as the Orbitrap Fusion Lumos, Exploris480 and soon Orbitrap Astral, and nano-flow liquid chromatography systems like the Ultimate 3000 and Vanquish Neo.
In this role, you will engage closely with users to provide expert advice on experimental design and critical steps in sample preparation. Your responsibilities will include preparing samples for mass spectrometry analysis using techniques such as in-gel digestion, SP3 workflows on KingFisher, TMT labeling, and offline fractionation methods. You will perform LC-MS/MS analyses to acquire high-quality proteomic data and analyze the results using software tools like FragPipe, DIA-NN, and Skyline, as well as automated data processing pipelines. Interpreting data and providing insightful feedback to users will be a key part of your role.
Troubleshooting technical challenges and contributing to the continuous improvement of laboratory workflows are essential aspects of the position. We expect you to stay updated on new methodologies and contribute to establishing innovative workflows within the facility. Maintaining close interaction with facility users and visitors, ensuring clear communication and effective expectation management, is crucial.
Qualifications and Experience
We are looking for a candidate with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in biology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, or a related life science field. Experience in protein biochemistry or proteomics in an academic or industrial setting is required, and experience with mass spectrometry techniques is desirable.
The ideal candidate should be able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team, possess strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and demonstrate self-motivation with a proactive approach to learning and implementing new workflows. Excellent organizational skills are necessary to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Exceptional communication skills are required for effective collaboration and user interaction. Fluency in English is essential, and knowledge of German is advantageous but not mandatory.
