The INM research group Bioprogrammable Materials is looking for an enthusiastic Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d) with experience in culturing microalgae or cyanobacteria. We combine synthetic biology and biomaterials to develop smart platforms for therapeutics and sensing applications in the form of Engineered Living Materials (ELMs). We are seeking to fill a 3-year funded Doctoral Researcher position for a project involving the development of co-culture ELMs containing symbiotic phytoplankton and lactobacilli for sustainable biotech. Your tasks Identifying phytoplankton strains that support growth of lactobacilli Engineering lactobacilli to better utilize nutrients from the phytoplankton Performing Adaptive Lab Evolution (ALE) to improve co-culture performance Assessing sustainable production of an industrial compound Active participation in the research activities of the group and collaboration with external partners Publish scientific papers and present results at international meetings Your profile We are seeking a person with a degree in biotechnology, biochemistry, microbiology or related fields, with practical experience in culturing microalgae or cyanobacteria and basic bacterial genetic engineering. The candidate will be part of an international, multi-disciplinary team in which English is the primary language of communication and reporting. Since we work on application-oriented research, candidates with entrepreneurial interests are appreciated.
