The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF is one of the world's leading research institutes in the fields of III/V semiconductors and synthetic diamond. Together with our partners from industry and science, we research and develop electronic, optoelectronic and quantum technological components and systems. The focus is on research and development for applications in the fields of security, health, energy, information and communication.
In the field of quantum technology, the institute is working on the realization of a quantum computer based on color centers in diamond. Here, nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are used to generate qubits. Using microwave CVD, NV centers are generated by nitrogen doping during diamond growth and characterized on site at the institute with the existing measurement setups with regard to their spin properties.
As part of your masterthesis, you will work on connecting the quantum computing experiments to an existing HPC system for the external execution of quantum algorithms and on optimizing user management. In order to accelerate the execution of experiments, the automation of measurement protocols is also part of your work.
Prior to the masterthesis, an employment as a student assistant is possible.
What you will do
* Programming the HPC connection of the quantum computing experiments
* Development of efficient user management
* Further development of the Python-based software control of the control hardware for the automation of experiments
* Documentation of further developments
What you bring to the table
* You are an enrolled student in the field of computer science, physics or a comparable subject.
* You have good programming skills in Python.
* You have good language skills in German or English.
* You enjoy experimental and scientific work.
* You are a team player, open-minded and motivated to work independently and purposefully.
What you can expect
* A thesis at Fraunhofer IAF allows you to apply the knowlege you have acquired during your studies to specific research projects
* With us, you can work scientifically and gain project experience at the same time
* We offer modern laboratory equipment, supervision by experienced scientists and a variety of opportunities for further education
* By organising your working hours flexibly to suit your studies, we enable you to manage your time freely and independently
* There is a Frelo station (bike hire system) and a car park with an e-charging station right next to the institute
The monthly working time is 40 hours. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
Have we piqued your interest? Then apply via the ‘Apply now’ button with your CV, a cover letter, a current certificate of enrolment and your certificates. Please note that we cannot consider applications by email. We look forward to getting to know you!
