EMBL is Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 80 independent research groups covering the full spectrum of molecular biology. EICAT’s Internal Scientific Training team coordinates EMBL’s Predoctoral and Postdoctoral programmes, which host around 500 fellows at any given time. Both programmes leverage EMBL’s interdisciplinary and dynamic scientific environment and, together with the EMBL Fellows’ Career Service and the Fellows’ Complementary Skills programme, provide world-class skills and career development for our fellows. Your role You will join EICAT’s Internal Scientific Training Team, reporting directly to the Fellows’ Skills and Career Development Lead. You will work closely with the Scientific Training Officer responsible for the Fellows’ Complementary Skills Programme. To assess the needs of the fellows’ community, you will liaise regularly with colleagues running EMBL’s Fellowship Programmes and interface with all stakeholders involved in training at EMBL. Your main focus is the coordination and support of activities within the EMBL Fellows’ Career Service, which provides EMBL’s pre-and postdoctoral fellows at all EMBL sites with career information and guidance. You will also support EMBL’s Complementary Skills Programme, which offers courses and other activities to support fellows in developing relevant skills such as grant writing, scientific project management, and critical thinking. Current activities include but are not limited to: Providing in-person and virtual individual career guidance sessions in 1-to-1 meetings. Reviewing job application materials for both academic and non-academic positions (e.g., CVs, cover letters, research proposals.) Co-designing, organising and delivering in-person and virtual workshops on career topics and potentially introductory-level courses on skills topics (for example, mentoring master’s students or scientific writing). Organising a variety of events related to careers or skills topics. Identifying and compiling relevant resources to summarise information on different career options, recruitment practices, and effective approaches for job application materials. Developing materials and exercises to support self-directed career planning and skills development Creating resources and organising activities open to the external scientific community, such as the EMBL Careers Blog and the EMBL Careers and Skills Webinar series. Evaluating the quality of current offers, conducting impact assessments and gathering key statistics. Engaging actively with internal and external stakeholders to foster collaborations. The position is based at EMBL Heidelberg and requires European travel. You have A PhD in the molecular life sciences or a related subject with postdoc experience or professional experience in other roles in the academic, public or private sector Alternatively, a degree in HR, psychology or a related field, and experience advising or recruiting researchers or scientists in an academic, public, or private sector setting. Excellent interpersonal skills - including the ability to establish effective communication channels with a wide range of stakeholders, and to handle sensitive matters confidentially. A high degree of proactivity and service orientation. A proven ability for collaborative work in an international team. A positive, solutions-focused mindset with strong organisational and critical thinking skills. The ability to clearly explain complex topics and a first-rate command of written and spoken English. You may also have Practical experience in project and grant management or scientific writing. Fluency in German or in other languages, especially French, Italian or Spanish. A strong understanding of the career landscape for scientists across Europe, both within and beyond academia. Experience in providing career guidance or delivering training to scientists. Contract length: 3 years, renewable to a maximum of 9 years.
