At the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy IEG, we conduct research in the fields of integrated energy infrastructures, geothermal energy and sector coupling for a successful energy transition. Based at several locations spread throughout Germany, we pursue applied research to develop innovative technologies for our clients from public agencies and private enterprises, with the ultimate objective of transferring innovation into marketable products and processes.
The energy transition stands and falls with the decarbonization of the heat supply. To accomplish this task, it is necessary to develop new software for the design and operation of energy systems. We have developed an energy model for the design and operation of energy systems for neighborhoods. The model is written in Python. We are currently aiming to provide our backend with a graphical frontend for internal and external users. To this end, we are looking for experienced Pythonistas throughout Germany to support us with software development. We work in an agile Scrum team and see a student as a full team member.
What you will do
Frontend Development:
* Your main responsibility will be to design, develop, and maintain the front-end components of our Python-based energy system planning software (in Django, Flask, Dash etc.).
* You challenge your new ideas on adequate UI/UX with our energy planners and engineers.
* You will collaborate with backend developers to integrate user-facing elements with backend logic.
* Implementation of Data Pipelines, adapters etc.
Code Quality and Testing:
* You help to improve the performance and structure of existing code, and
* support us by conducting unit and integration tests to ensure software quality.
Collaboration and Communication:
* You will work closely with a cross-functional and interdisciplinary team,
* participate actively in Scrum ceremonies (dailies, sprint planning, retrospectives), and
* contribute to the continuous improvement of the development process and team efficiency.
What you bring to the table
* You are pursuing a degree in engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, the natural sciences or a related field with a focus on IT
* You have a good knowledge of Python.
* Some experience as a front-end developer is desirable but not a must-have.
* Experience with software development procedures and version control systems (e.g., Git) is desirable.
* Knowledge of thermodynamics and physics is a plus.
* You have a good command of English.
What you can expect
* You will become a fully-fledged member of our dynamic and supportive Scrum team.
* The opportunity to work with experts on innovative energy system planning software.
* Practice-oriented work environment
* Supervisors who will strengthen and support you to become successful.
* Targeted and individual guidance and mentoring.
* Well-equipped technical infrastructure and flexible working hours
