Science Communication and Public Outreach Officer (m/f/d)
The Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) is an independent research institution for basic biomedical research. As a foundation under civil law and member of the Leibniz Association, the Institute holds a leading position both nationally and internationally. The LIV is located on the research campus in Hamburg-Eppendorf, in close proximity to the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), and at the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) on the Hamburg-Bahrenfeld research campus.
We are seeking to fill the following position as soon as possible, either full-time or part-time (up to 80% working hours):
Science Communication and Public Outreach Officer (m/f/d)
Your tasks
Science communication & Media Relations
* Tailoring complex research findings for various audiences (specialist audience, general public, policy makers, industry, LIV staff)
* Developing summaries of scientific publications for a general audience in close collaboration with our researchers
* Development of innovative formats for conveying research content (e.g. podcasts, videos, interactive presentations)
* Advancing and implementing the LIV's internal and external communication strategy
* Developing and maintaining relationships with specialized and general media outlets
* Drafting press releases, feature articles, and other texts for print and online media
* Advising the Board of Directors and department heads on the communication strategy
Online Communication (Website, Social Media)
* Strategic development and editorial management of the LIV website (www.leibniz-liv.de)
* Creation of target-group-oriented content for online channels (texts, images, videos) and maintenance of social media channels (Bluesky, Instagram, LinkedIn) to increase reach and interaction
Event Management and Networking
* Support in the conceptualization, organization, and execution of events, symposia, and workshops
* Development and implementation of outreach formats and events for the general public (e.g., open house days, foundation days, etc.)
* Support of the identification of funding opportunities through philanthropic partnerships and sponsorships
* Coordination of press relations for the Leibniz Center Infection (www.lc-infection.de
) and communication with other cooperation partners and stakeholders from science, politics, industry, and other sectors
Your profile
* You hold a university degree with a bioscience-medical background or in the field of communication/public relations, combined with a strong affinity for scientific topics
* You possess several years of professional experience in public relations or research marketing within the scientific sector or research-active companies
* You have the ability to convey complex scientific and technical topics in an understandable and target-group-specific manner
* You have very good IT skills in MS Office programs and an affinity for content management systems (e.g. TYPO3) and social media applications
* You have experience in image and graphic editing
* You are a strong communicator with a confident demeanor, a strong service mentality, and excellent interpersonal skills, who enjoys tackling new challenges
* You possess pronounced intercultural competence and knowledge in the field of crisis communication
* You have strong organizational skills, creativity, a high degree of initiative, and team spirit
* As an internationally oriented institute, we require excellent English and German skills, both written and spoken

This position is initially limited to two years, with the option of becoming permanent.
