The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geotechnologies IEG conducts research at eight locations in the fields of integrated energy infrastructures, geothermal energy and sector coupling for a successful energy transition. Our research institute conducts applied research, develops innovative technologies for public and industrial clients and translates these into marketable products and processes.
The Competence Center »Energy Management and Control« develops innovative solutions for the economically and technically optimal operation of highly complex energy systems. We develop efficient energy and load management strategies using state-of-the-art methods from the fields of predictive control and optimization processes as well as machine learning. The focus is always on the sustainable design of energy systems. The position is offered as part of a research project in which we are developing and implementing a digital twin for the operational management of a globally unique concept for the seasonal utilization of environmental cooling in close cooperation with an industrial company.
We are looking for a research assistant to support us at our Cottbus or Bochum locations.
What you will do
* You will support the analytical and data-driven modeling of systems such as free coolers, heat pumps, and piping networks (among others).
* You will implement these control models in software and conduct simulation studies.
* You will contribute to the design and implementation of predictive energy management systems.
* You will derive specifications and requirements based on data sheets.
What you bring to the table
* You are studying in a master's program in an engineering or natural sciences field; knowledge in energy, process, or environmental engineering is an advantage.
* Solid knowledge in modeling of thermal components, control engineering, optimization, or systems theory.
* Practical programming experience in PYTHON and/or MATLAB.
* A self-reliant work style and effective communication skills in German or English.
* Desirable: Experience in the implementation and design of digital twins, the application of machine learning methods, and the operation of geothermal systems.
What you can expect
* There is the possibility of writing a thesis.
* Collaboration in the implementation of a globally unique cooling supply concept
* A job with purpose - we are passionate about climate protection and the energy transition!
* We will make you a fully-fledged member of one of our agile teams, in which you will work together with developers and researchers as equals
* We want to support you with a task that inspires you! You will have the opportunity to contribute your own ideas to the research direction.
