At the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB, we combine biology and technology in our business units Health, Sustainable Chemistry, Environment and Climate Protection. We develop processes, technologies and products for patient-tailored healthcare, a sustainable bioeconomy and a climate-neutral and resource-efficient circular economy and successfully bring new solutions to industrial implementation. What you will do
Join our innovative and interdisciplinary environment and conduct research as part of a doctoral thesis on sustainable methods for the electrochemical synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles, an important class of chemical compounds used in the pharmaceutical industry and crop protection. The position is explicitly aimed at scientists who wish to pursue a dissertation in the field of electro-organic synthesis.
• Development of electrochemical processes for the synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles
• Planning, execution, and evaluation of electro-organic experiments
• Organic synthesis and analysis of reference substances
• Investigating the effects of electrode material, electrolyte, operating parameters, and process performance on the electrochemical synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles
• Publication of results at conferences and in scientific journals
What you bring to the table
• A strong scientific university degree (high GPA, honours, or similar) in chemistry, chemical engineering or a related field
• The willingness to carry out a dissertation
• Solid knowledge of organic chemistry and practical experience with organic synthesis
• Experience in electrochemistry and/or electrosynthesis is an advantage
• In-depth knowledge of analytical techniques (GC-MS, LC, NMR, etc.)
• You enjoy working with interdisciplinary concepts and solving technical problems in the laboratory
• The ability to work independently on scientific issues and develop new solutions
• Fluent in written and spoken English
• Responsibility – for yourself and your actions
• Enthusiasm for experimental work and the ability to work independently on scientific issues and develop innovative solutions
