You will conduct research on “Design and Implementation of xApps for Enhancing Security in O-RAN”. Principle duties and essential functions The Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) architecture represents a significant shift in the telecommunications industry, promoting openness, interoperability, and flexibility. However, the increased complexity and openness of O-RAN also introduce new security challenges, particularly in the Radio Access Network (RAN) elements. This thesis aims to address these challenges by developing xApps for secure RAN elements. The proposed research will focus on enhancing the security of Near-Real Time RAN Intelligent Controller (Near RT RIC) and E2 nodes through the development and deployment of specialized xApps. This thesis aims to contribute significantly to the advancement of secure O-RAN implementations, ensuring robust and resilient network operations. Principle duties and essential functions Literature Review: Conduct an extensive review of existing research on O-RAN architecture, security challenges in RAN elements, and the current state of xApps development. This will provide a solid foundation for understanding the landscape and identifying gaps that the thesis aims to address. Testbed Setup and Installation: Establish a testbed environment that replicates a real-world O-RAN setup. This will involve configuring Near RT RIC, E2 nodes, and other relevant components to create a controlled environment for testing and development. Development of xApps: Design and develop xApps specifically aimed at enhancing the security of RAN elements. These xApps will focus on various security aspects such as intrusion detection, anomaly detection, and secure communication protocols. Test and Evaluation of Effectiveness: Implement the developed xApps in the testbed environment and conduct rigorous testing to evaluate their effectiveness. This will include performance metrics, security assessments, and resilience testing against potential threats. Documentation and Defense: Compile comprehensive documentation of the research process, methodologies, xApp development, testing procedures, and findings and include this in the master thesis. Knowledge, skills and experience required Good programming skills in Python and a solid knowledge of C/C++ Deep knowledge of communications protocol and mobile technologies such as 4G, 5G. Experience with simulation tools such as ns3, OMNeT Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Able to work independently Benefits Possibility to work in an international, multicultural environment Strong team-oriented and friendly work culture Flexible working hours model Fitness-, travel cost- and kindergarten allowance as well as drinks and fruits for free Employee discounts e. g. for events and branded products
