Master thesis in the Competence Center for Micro- and Nanotechnologies in Jena In the Leibniz Institute of Photonics Technology ( Leibniz IPHT ), the Competence Center for Micro- and Nanotechnologies offers the possibility for a Master Thesis on the subject “Synthesis of ultra-dark absorber on flexible substrates” with the option of employment on the basis of a HiWi contract. A coating process developed at Leibniz IPHT enables the synthesis of highly absorbent thin films by self-assembly from planar silver. The resulting structures exhibit the highest absorption (> 99 %) in the wavelength range from 220 nm to 2500 nm and are therefore among the blackest layers in the UV to near-infrared range. The reproducible production of large-area absorber layers on thin substrates (e.g. foils, SiN membranes) is crucial, especially with regard to planned applications in the field of energy conversion through Power-to-X. The aim of this work is to systematically analyze the substrate-dependent deposition of highly absorbent 3D nanostructures by the synthesis process using metastable atomic layer deposition (MS-ALD). Your tasks: Design and manufacture of membranes using MEMS technology in the clean room Coating of films (PP, aluminum, etc.) by means of metastable atomic layer deposition and its characterization with suitable analysis methods (e.g. spectroscopy, profilometry, etc.) Systematic analysis of the layer properties as a function of the substrate or on membranes Long-term stability tests of the optimized layers Your qualification and skills: Bachelor`s degree in physics/material sciences (FH/Uni) or equivalent Experimental skills and interest in working in cleanroom The ability to work creatively and independently towards developing your own research project We offer: An open welcoming culture and an inclusive and interdisciplinary working environment: Located on the Beutenberg campus in Jena, Leibniz-IPHT is home to more than 400 employees from around the world working at the interface of physics, biochemistry, technology, data science and medicine to develop the photonic technologies of tomorrow. World-class equipment and facilities : Leibniz-IPHT has a large number of physics, chemistry and biology laboratories at the highest level. It also has state-of-the-art fiber drawing and clean room facilities as well as microfluidics fabrication and big data computing facilities. Parallel to the master's thesis, we offer employment on the basis of a HiWi contract. Salary: Remuneration is based on the marginal income limit for a maximum of 39.5 hours/month up to a maximum of €553.00 per month. About us: We are a modern, internationally focused research institute. Work-life balance is one of our central concerns. We value diversity and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of gender, disability, nationality or ethnic and social origin. If women are underrepresented in the area of the advertised position, they will be given preferential consideration in the hiring process if they are equally qualified.
