Job Description: Hybrid and Electric Propulsion systems represent some of the biggest industrial challenges of our time. With the X-Labs organization, we are targeting advanced technological breakthroughs that could be key enablers of our long-term goal to ‘electrify the skies’. Through electrification and hybridization, we are driving a step change in aviation performance. Enabled by the high efficiency of electric propulsion chains and by allowing us to significantly rethink air vehicle design. These advances are opening up the design space and enabling us to look at new concepts and new markets previously impossible to envisage. 1XAD is contributing to several Airbus initiatives, for example the team is developing and testing electrical and hybrid propulsion systems in the frame of the Airbus ZEROe pre-program, Zero Emission Demonstrator, UAM and ASCEND. Job Description We are looking for a LH2-Safety Master Thesis Student (m/f/d) to join us at the Airbus site in OTTOBRUNN in E-Aircraft Systems, part of Airbus X-Labs. For this thesis you will join the hydrogen team within X-Labs to work on the development of a Safety Concept for a new test field, which for the first time includes cryogenic hydrogen at the Ottobrunn site. All hazard areas relevant to occupational safety are to be analyzed and then evaluated. In particular, the definition of measures, the overall operational concept including implementation/monitoring of measures as well as the specifications for the creation of process descriptions, work instructions and finally a Safety Manual for this test field. The thesis is planned to begin in the first half of 2025, ideally starting in February, for an ideal duration of 6 months. You will be joining a highly visible, publicly known development project, helping to build novel tools that will be used in the future development of this technology. Tasks and Responsibilities Collaboration in risk assessment Summarizing all relevant requirements, especially against the background of technical regulation, codes and standards for the construction and joint operation, including the work equipment with interaction in an already existing hydrogen infrastructure Determining the necessary measures to counteract the expected pressure, explosion, fire and cold burn hazards as a result of the risk assessment Consideration of the interactions between the various parts of the test field and its environment Development of a Safety Concept for the LH2 test field Development of a General Safety Manual for the LH2 test field Participation in regular appointments within internally and externally (e.g. with suppliers and authorities) Strong interaction with all relevant parties/stakeholders Presentation of the results Required skills You are preparing a Master Thesis in Germany, in Aerospace engineering or similar, and you have the following competences: - Interest in hydrogen applications as well as in safety conception - First Experience with hydrogen applications - First Experience with - Knowledge of aircraft propulsion is a plus - Comfortable working in English Behavioural qualities essential to the exercise of the profession - Have a spirit of initiative and innovation, - Be rigorous and reliable in your work, - Be autonomous and curious in your approach, - Be critical / self-critical, - Be open-minded and see beyond the limits, - Maintain good interpersonal skills and team spirit. - Be pragmatic in finding solutions, adapted to the current stage of development This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company’s success, reputation and sustainable growth.
