The challenges imposed byclimate change demand the realization of extremely energy-efficienthardware for future information technology systems. For integratedsemiconductor circuits, device scaling has been the key forperformance enhancement and energy reduction. However, traditionalscaling is reaching its limits. Therefore, the CollaborativeResearch Center / Transregio called “Future Electronics by ActiveDevices in Three Dimensions (TRR 404)”(cfaed.tu-dresden.de/trr-home) aims at new, active devices whichmake use of the volume on top of the transistors' layer in theback-end-of-line region. TRR 404 follows a Technology-Design-Systemco-approach to improve key indicators such as power, speed, andarea usage at the same time. Exploring a completely new approachfor microelectronics technology, this project teams upmaterialists, electrical engineers, and computer scientists ofForschungszentrum Jülich, TU Dresden University, RWTH AachenUniversity, AMO GmbH Aachen, MPI Microstructure Physics Halle,NaMLab gGmbH Dresden, and Ruhr-University Bochum.
