Job Description
1. During your thesis you will conduct a comprehensive literature review and expert interviews to identify "standard" manufacturing process chains.
2. You will estimate the potential environmental impacts of main manufacturing processes within typical process chains, focusing on material scrap rates and energy consumption. You will have to incorporate factors that contribute to the uncertainty of these evaluations.
3. Addressing specific challenges in calculating scrap rates for mechanically engineered parts within selected manufacturing processes also falls within your area of responsibility.
4. Finally, you will analyze, summarize, and evaluate your findings, focusing on the completeness scores derived from the pedigree matrix for manufacturing processes in the overall production chain.
Qualifications
5. Education: Master studies in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Process Engineering, Industrial Ecology or comparable
6. Experience and Knowledge: strong understanding of life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies and industrial manufacturing processes; familiarity with the structure and usage of the Ecoinvent database; understanding of what the pedigree matrix is in the context of LCA and how it is used to assess data quality and uncertainty; basic knowledge of Activity Browser or Brightway for conducting LCAs is desirable; knowledge of relevant standards ( ISO 14040/44), production processes, and energy types; Python programming skills are a plus
7. Personality and Working Practice: you havestrong communication skills, particularly in discussing technical concepts with experts; you are interested in technical topics; you demonstrate exceptional skills in independent and structured work, with attention to detail and you can effectively summarize as well as present research findings
8. Languages: fluent in German and English
