Nature and Scope of Role The Design Engineering Manager is a key member of the Engineering staff and has responsibility for leading the Design Engineering team of Drive Products at the Ratingen, Germany location. The position reports to the Sr. Director of Engineering. The individual will play a critical role on the Engineering team to guide the design work regarding execution of our new product roadmap as well as growing our existing drives product lines. The role partners with other functional areas to ensure the Engineering department is meeting the needs of internal and external Customers. During these developments and as a result of convergence of multiple technologies, intimate knowledge and capability in the areas of servo drives, controls, power electronics, mechanics, motors, and high-speed digital communications is necessary. Development priorities are set in accordance with the Kollmorgen Product Roadmap as well as Key Customer Priorities. Makes resourcing decisions/assignments of Design Engineering staff to support the needs of internal and external Customers Builds the Design Engineering Team through high-quality development plans and effective hiring Maintain and manage KPI (Key Performance Indicators) metrics for the group. Typical metrics are Engineering release On-time Delivery, Engineering Efficiency, Engagement activities, Engineering Change Order backlog, Value Engineering projects, Cost roadmaps, and other metrics depending on business needs. Provides expert consultation in one or more areas for the design, development, and implementation of technical products and systems. Able to interact internationally within Kollmorgen engineering and other functions to complete projects, especially when skill-sets or capacity isn’t available within the local team. Relies on extensive experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. Demonstrates a broad range of expertise in a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures. Recommends alterations and product development needs in the area managed. Supports Value Engineering efforts including identification and execution of impactful projects. Responsible to design for compliance to various agency needs such as UL, CE, CSA, TUV, etc. Drives continuous improvement activity in forums, processes, and tools individually, with Engineering resources, and cross-functionally. Manages Engineering Change Control and participates in establishing and improving the ISO Procedures and Departmental procedures. Minimal travel is required. Must be available to travel to domestic and international locations as needed to visit Suppliers, Customers, and other Company locations/ functions ( Critical Competencies Experience serving as the Technical Lead and/or Project Manager of significant successful Development projects, bringing products from concept, through development and into production. Actively champions Business Management System tools Prior experience in a Supervisory role Experience of serving as a Product Development Engineer Demonstrated engineering analytical capability. Technical knowledge and experience in servo drives or similar technologies. Technical knowledge of servo drive manufacturing processes or similar technologies. Experience with CAD/ CAE tools preferred. Excellent project management skills, including project planning and work break-down structures. Excellent problem- solving skills Excellent communication skills (written and oral) Strong presentation skills Demonstrated successful Customer interaction history. Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, MS preferred 10 years of experience in the field or related area Candidates with backgrounds in power electronics and mechanical packaging preferred.
