Technical University Darmstadt and Fraunhofer IGD have been cooperating in the field of Computer Science since 1987, especially in graphical data processing and visual computing. The professorship is linked to the management of Fraunhofer IGD in a dual leadership role, encompassing the institute's scientific and entrepreneurial management and development within the Fraunhofer model and the overall Fraunhofer strategy. The appointment is based on the Karlsruhe model.
Technical University Darmstadt stands for excellent and relevant science. Global transformations - from the energy transition to Industry 4.0 and artificial intelligence - challenge us. We play a decisive role in shaping these far-reaching change processes through outstanding findings and forward-looking study programs. The Department of Computer Science in particular - founded in 1972, it is one of the first departments of computer science in Germany - covers a broad spectrum of topics in basic and applied research as well as in teaching. The main research areas include artificial intelligence, cyber security & privacy and complex, networked systems.
Fraunhofer IGD is the leading international institute in the field of applied visual computing. In addition to computer graphics and computer vision, Fraunhofer IGD conducts research into technologies for 3D simulations and 3D fabrication/3D printing, as well as in the fields of virtual and augmented reality. Fraunhofer IGD thus addresses the application areas of automotive engineering, medicine, and cyber security.
The professorship focuses particularly on the areas of Visual Artificial Intelligence or 3D Modelling/Reconstruction/Fabrication. You have in-depth experience in one or more of the following areas:
1. Image/Media Analysis & Understanding
2. Generative Synthesis
3. Geometric 3D Modelling (incl. 3D Analysis / 3D Reconstruction; Computational Design)
4. Mixed Reality (Virtual, Augmented, and Extended Reality)
5. Computational Fabrication (incl. 3D Printing)
6. Semantic Visual Modelling
7. Visualization
8. 3D Simulation
Your tasks will include developing and teaching visual computing fundamentals, methods and processes. In close connection with the applied research topics at Fraunhofer IGD, the university professorship is intended to ensure the corresponding advancement of basic knowledge.
In your new role, you will competently represent the key topics in research and teaching as well as in research and technology management vis-à-vis public research funding and research stakeholders from industry and science; in addition, you will expand the strategic connection between the University and the Fraunhofer Institute. You can expect a wide range of projects with a high degree of practical relevance and great creative freedom in research.
You have many years of management experience in large, interdisciplinary research groups, an awareness of equal opportunities, experience in the strategic planning, acquisition and implementation of large-volume national and international research and development projects in various business areas, experience in working with industry and expertise in increasing the efficiency of development processes and in technology commercialization. International work and teaching experience and/or experience in international projects and scientific-political networking are advantages. As part of the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main metropolitan region, TU Darmstadt and its surroundings are characterized by an international outlook. A core element of this is a cosmopolitan climate with functional multilingualism at our university. Therefore, very good English and - after three years at the latest - good German language skills are expected.
The recruitment requirements of Sections 67 and 68 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) apply. Such a professorship is tenured with a remuneration package commensurate with experience and qualifications, following the German "W-Besoldung" or a comparable employment relationship.
