As one of 76 institutes and research facilities of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the leading organization for applied research in Europe, we show how to not only master crises, but grow from them. Pushing boundaries. Always trying something new. Not just thinking, but thinking ahead. We turn research into the future.
We want an earth that is worth living on. With our applied research on Circular Economy, Carbon Management, Green Hydrogen and Local Energy Systems, we make concrete contributions to achieving the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Our employees conduct research in the areas of energy, environment, safety, health, communication and mobility.
In the Sustainability and Participation department, we create tailor-made sustainability strategies, help close loops in the circular economy and create sustainability assessments for products, processes and services. As part of your Master's thesis, you will develop a dynamic, software-based system model for plastic cycles. With the help of scenarios, you will discuss the question of when a desired circularity (through reuse and recycling) can be achieved and what role different scenarios on technical infrastructures and user behavior play in this.
What you will do
* Iterative development of a dynamic socio-technical model for the simulation of plastic cycles in Europe
* Evaluation of data from literature and existing primary data to determine the system parameters (market development, service life, sorting and recycling rates and qualities, political framework conditions, etc.)
* Implementation and simulation of the model in the form of a stock-flow model (software-based using “Anylogic”)
* Deriving scenarios for plastic and recyclate availability and achieving circularity in terms of the circular economy
* Publication or collaboration of the results is desired
What you bring to the table
* Studies in environmental or chemical engineering, process simulation, sustainability and resource management, economics/ political sciences or comparable suitable fields
* Knowledge of system analysis and corresponding simulation software (Vensim, Stella, Anylogic) is an advantage
* Previous experience in modeling complex systems as well as in other fields is an advantage
* Good understanding of interactions in dynamic systems
* Ability to work independently, Problem-solving skills and enjoyment of interdisciplinary work
What you can expect
* As part of a dynamic team, you actively drive sustainable solutions for a resource-efficient future
* Opportunity to combine your knowledge from your studies with practical experience at the interface between business and science and to integrate your own ideas
* New Work, diversity and cooperative interaction are important components of our strategic orientation
* Flexible working hours - we know that your studies come first
* Flexible work locations that fit your studies - mobile work and on-site work are combined as needed
* Intense support for the preparation of your final thesis
* Health and mindfulness programs for good balance
* You can find even more attractive benefits here: Fraunhofer UMSICHT as employer
