The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) is seeking a dynamic Director of the Digital Revenue Network (DRN) to drive innovation and sustainability in digital revenue for news publishers. WAN-IFRA is the leading global association for news publishers, providing expertise and services to help our members thrive in a digital world while upholding press freedom and media independence.
Position Overview
As the lead expert on digital revenue at WAN-IFRA, you will oversee all DRN-related products and services, with a particular focus on Europe. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, you will balance strategic leadership, community building, and financial sustainability while addressing the digital challenges faced by publisher members.
Key Responsibilities
1. Develop and expand the Digital Revenue Network, creating valuable products and services for news media professionals.
2. Create AI initiatives and projects that support the news media industry, working closely with technology companies.
3. Position DRN as a premier knowledge hub for digital subscriptions, data analytics, digital advertising, alternative revenue models, and AI in media.
4. Support WAN-IFRA’s membership growth and retention through DRN initiatives.
5. Design and deliver high-value executive programs that foster knowledge sharing and innovation among leading publishers.
6. Develop boot camps and accelerator programs on digital revenue strategies for small and medium-sized publishers.
7. Oversee the DRN events portfolio, including flagship conferences like Digital Media Europe, study tours, and webinars, while managing related budgets.
8. Enhance content for WAN-IFRA’s annual Congress and digital media conferences, identifying key case studies and speakers, and moderating sessions as needed.
9. Provide consulting services or coordinate industry experts to support publishers in digital revenue growth.
10. Lead a team of five professionals, including specialists in marketing, events, and project management.
Qualifications & Experience
1. 10+ years of experience in digital media and publishing, with a strong understanding of revenue strategies.
2. Familiarity with AI technologies and their applications in news media.
3. Experience engaging with C-level executives on strategic initiatives.
4. Strong presentation and moderation skills at industry events.
5. Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
6. Marketing and sales acumen to articulate the value of DRN programs to senior publishers.
7. Leadership skills to manage a team and collaborate across departments.
8. Experience managing a P&L is a plus.
9. Fluent in English; German proficiency is highly desirable.
10. Willingness to travel (~60 days per year).
11. Deep understanding of media trends, digital transformation, regulations, and audience engagement.
12. Ability to engage with global media corporations, local publishers, and independent journalists.
13. Capacity to develop long-term strategies aligned with the evolving news media landscape.
14. Strong written and verbal skills to advocate for the industry.
15. Ability to navigate and capitalize on emerging opportunities in the media sector.
