At the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, we may not be developing swords against the dark side of the Force, but our developments often sound like science fiction. Because we are shaping the technologies and processes for the future of digital production, packaging and scanning technologies, and many other laser-based applications, e.g. 3D printing. We are currently looking for a dedicated research assistant (m/f/d) to support us in the field of laser metal deposition.
In addition to classical laser metal deposition (LMD), Fraunhofer ILT is also researching extreme high-speed laser metal deposition (EHLA). Both processes are based on the melting of a metallic filler material by means of laser radiation, which can serve various functions after solidification on the component. In addition to the actual manufacturing process, the activities at the Fraunhofer ILT also include the metallographic preparation of samples, as well as the scientific analysis of the results.
Collaboration takes place within the framework of application-oriented research projects with partners from industry and science. The LMD department at Fraunhofer ILT covers a wide range of applications - from the coating of complex material systems and the repair of cost-intensive components to the additive manufacturing of complete components (3D printing).
What you will do
* You will familiarize yourself with the additive processes of laser deposition welding and EHLA
* You will prepare and evaluate samples using metallography and hardness testing
* Your tasks will also include the characterization and interpretation of additively manufactured structures using SEM, EDX, and XRD
* You will evaluate the properties of component surfaces and geometry
* You will prepare and present the results
What you bring to the table
* You are studying mechanical engineering, materials science, materials engineering, or other technical subjects
* Knowledge of additive manufacturing, laser technology, and materials science is an advantage, but not required
* It is much more important that you are interested in research and scientific problems and that you are characterized by a motivated, independent, and structured way of working
What you can expect
👥 Team spirit: Creative and interdisciplinary working environment, a highly motivated team of experts, flat hierarchies, and a “you” culture.
🖥 Workplace: Excellent equipment in terms of machinery and devices.
💪 Co-design: Independent project management with room for innovative ideas in applied research.
🧘♀️ Work-life balance: Benefit from flexible working hours based on trust.
📈 Development opportunities: With us, you have the opportunity for individual development through a wide range of training opportunities.
➕ Advantages: Opportunity to enjoy exciting corporate benefits.
🚐 Travel: Good transport connections (public transport), parking spaces directly in front of the institute, an e-charging station, and a parking garage.
🕶 Prospects: The opportunity to write your thesis or complete an internship semester.
he remuneration is based on the overall company agreement for the employment of student assistants.
The weekly working hours amount to 14 hours and can be discussed individually during the interview.
The position is initially limited to 12 months, with the aim of a longer-term position alongside studies.
We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
