Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings - carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use. Role Purpose The Application Engineer (AE) is responsible for representing Corning as a product and system expert for the region. He/she must be technically knowledgeable about the application, installation and specifications of Corning Optical Communications products to provide correct information to our customers quickly and reliably. The Application Engineer advises customers on Corning product recommendations based on the requirements given by the customer. He/she must provide consultation and product recommendation. The Application Engineer must understand the customer needs and promote the value of Corning solutions which meet those needs to achieve the highest profitability. Key Responsibilities - Provide technical support, training and presentations of Corning products directly to end customer, installer, or distribution partners. - Advise customers (internal or external) about products and their use in various applications. Must be able to explain benefits and determine detailed list of part numbers required for a system solution. - Communicate technical advantages/applications of Corning products to customers. - Create datasheets, technical papers, product guidance as needed. - Provide pre-sales customer support including product recommendation, system design, system installation training and testing. - Provide after-sales support for customer including installation advice and troubleshooting at customer site. Also includes assisting quality and Customer Operations department in cases of Customer Feedback/RMAs. - Provide system solutions including Bill of Materials and drawings based on customer requirements to fulfill customer RFIs/RFQs (request for information/quotes). Day to Day Responsibilities: - Support customer service department and customers with product recommendation, specification, confirmation/compliance, application, design/Bill of Material proposals. - Give feedback to development/PLM (product line management) regarding ideas for product improvement and compliance to regional standards and norms. - Analyze competitors' products and provide feedback to development/PLM. - Focus efforts on high margin/profitable product sets and customers to ensure long-term success. Experiences/Education - Required - Required education: University Engineering Degree. - Required years and area of experience: Preferred Telecom or Datacom: 3 years. Required skills: - Strong computer skills (MS Windows based: Power point, Word, Excel, Visio). - Strong German writing and speaking skills for interaction with customers. Additionally English as operational internal language. Other languages are helpful. - Ability to convey technical, complex ideas to highly technical customers/colleagues or equally less technically inclined customers/colleagues. - Ability to present/give training comfortably and confidently in front of groups from 10-50 people. Desired Skills: - FTTH network design. - Good hand skills: basic mechanical /troubleshooting/ repair skills. Soft Skills: - Ability to work comfortably in a team to support others, learn from others and share information with others. - Ability to lead meetings to communicate internally the needs of customer at project sites. - Ability to listen to customer and work with difficult customers patiently in order to understand their needs and resolve their problems. Other Information: Travel Requirements: 25%. Primarily continental Europe, mainly in the DACH area. However, candidate must be prepared to travel anywhere within EMEA region including Israel and Africa. Flexibility to travel on short notice requiring overnight stay. All travel methods may be used: train, car, bus, ferry, plane. Must have proper Visas or EU citizenship to allow unrestricted travel. Candidate must possess current and valid local driving license and clean driving record to allow renting vehicles in other countries if required.
