Doctoral Student (m/w/d) for the Theoretical Investigation of Novel Magnetic Quantum Phases Kennziffer: QM 2025/1 The Department for ATQM of Prof. Reuther studies strongly correlated electron systems, with a special focus on quantum magnetism. We are particularly interested in a theoretical understanding of frustrated spin systems, possibly hosting novel types of quantum states such as spin liquids. In collaboration with our experimental colleagues at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, we aim to transfer our knowledge to real materials, to develop a microscopic understanding of magnetism in nature. Your Tasks You investigate novel magnetic quantum phases in complex three-dimensional lattice structures, transfer the obtained insights to magnetic materials, and collaborate with experimental groups within and outside the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. You investigate emergent phenomena of quantum magnetism, such as fractional quasiparticles and effective gauge theories. You apply machine learning methods for modelling magnetic quantum materials. You collaborate closely with the Physics Department at Freie Universität Berlin and its research groups. Your Profile Master's degree in theoretical solid state physics Profound knowledge in the field of quantum magnetism Experience with analytical or numerical methods in solid state physics Programming experience Your Benefits at HZB Opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future in cooperation with leading international researchers Commitment to diversity and sustainability through an inclusive working environment, promotion of diversity sensitivity andimplementation of sustainable and climate-neutral methods Career-enhancing networking opportunities and individual mentoring and support from theHZB Graduate Centre andHZB Postdoc Office Attractive remuneration through payment according to TVöD Bund 30 days holiday/year Extensive additional benefits, such as company pension plan (VBL), subsidy for public transport (Deutschlandticket Job) and company sports programs Good work-life balance through counselling services on family and career and flexible working time models: Flextime, part-time, hybrid working And a team that is looking forward to meeting you Fixed term contract for 48 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund). How to apply Please upload the following documents with your application: Motivation letter describing your background and research interests Curriculum vitae (CV) listing your education, publications, research experience, and contact details of at least two references Scientific certifications We look forward to receiving your application via our application management system by23.02.2025. For reasons of data protection regulations, we are unfortunately unable to consider applications that reach us by other means (such as email or mail) in the application process. We very much want our workplace to be diverse, and welcome applications from people with different backgrounds. It is our mission to promote equal opportunities and to improve women’s representation in the workforce. We are therefore very interested in receiving applications from women. Where the qualifications are met, we will give preference to people with disabilities.
