Introduction to Role:
Join us as an Associate Director, Data Governance, where you'll be at the forefront of turning our FAIR data strategy into action. As part of a cross-functional team of science, data and technology enthusiasts, you will shape and implement the data governance strategy and be responsible for assuring quality and trust in the data. You will make our data findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable across systems and modalities. Working together with (data) scientists, bioinformaticians and engineers, you will be an advocate and thought leader of our data, educating employees and keeping a pulse on new best practices and technology.
Accountabilities:
In this role, you will create and implement data models/standards/dictionaries and controlled vocabularies for efficient storage, retrieval, and analysis of omics data. You will implement data quality rules and measures and drive the continuous improvement of our data quality. You will design and develop ontologies to represent biological knowledge related to omics and imaging data. You will collaborate with researchers and domain experts to ensure models accurately reflect biological processes. You will support centralization and maintenance of our data standards/CVs/ontologies into the AZ semantic layer. You will serve as a point of contact for our partners and vendors to support turning data standards into practice. You will document data models and ontologies clearly for future use and maintenance by humans and machines; maintain and update data models and ontologies as new knowledge emerges.
Essential Skills/Experience:
* Expertise (>3 years) in data modeling, CV development, ontology development
* Experience with data modeling techniques for biological data (e.g., relational databases, NoSQL databases)
* Understanding and extensive hands-on experience in at least one area of omics data (e.g., genomics data)
* Master or PhD in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related field (e.g., Physics, Computer Science, Math)
* Deep understanding of the FAIR data principles and how to implement them in the delivery of integrated X-Omics solutions
* Communication and presentation skills and a proactive mindset and motivation to drive and implement own ideas
* Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git)
Desirable Skills/Experience:
* Deep understanding and experience working with cross-omics data. Further experience with imaging data is a plus
* Experience with specific ontology development tools (e.g., Protégé, OBO Editor) and/or experience with specific biological databases and resources (e.g., Gene Ontology, KEGG)
* Knowledge of semantic web technologies (e.g., RDF, RDF Schema)
* Experience with common biomedical vocabularies (Gene Ontology, NCI Thesaurus, ISA-Tab, MeSH, Human Disease Ontology, BAO, EFO, Human Phenotype Ontology, others), ontology repositories (NCBO Bioportal, EBI OLS) and common reference databases (e.g., Uniprot, Ensembl, CHEMBL, EntrezGene, ClinicalTrials.gov).
* Experience with agile/scrum operations and planning as well as usage of Jira, Confluence
