We investigate how cancer develops, identify cancer risk factors and look for new cancer prevention strategies. We develop new methods with which tumors can be diagnosed more precisely and cancer patients can be treated more successfully. This is what makes our daily work so meaningful and exciting. ----------------------------------- The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT), the University of Duisburg-Essen (Faculty of Medicine), and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) are jointly appointing to the earliest possible date a new (joint appointment according to the Jülich model) The tenured professorship (employment status) will be located at the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT), site NCT West (Essen campus). The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) is a long-term cooperation between the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), excellent partners in university medicine and other outstanding research partners at various locations in Germany. With a focus on innovative clinical trials, the NCT enables new developments from the laboratory to be tested clinically quickly and to the highest standards, thereby making better diagnostic and treatment options available to patients. Special emphasis will be placed on personalized oncology, patient participation as research partners, rapid and fair patient access to advances in cancer research, and the training of future generations of clinical cancer researchers. As part of the National Decade against Cancer initiated by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the NCT has been expanded for this purpose. There are four new NCT sites in addition to Heidelberg and Dresden: Berlin, SouthWest (Tübingen/Stuttgart-Ulm), WERA (Würzburg with partners Erlangen, Regensburg, and Augsburg), and West (Essen/Köln). The new professorship will be located at the NCT West (Essen Campus) and is embedded in the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (), which is part of the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital Essen (). Upon completion generous space will be provided in the new NCT building in Essen. The professorship is embedded in the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital Essen with its excellent research environment in cancer medicine including the West German Cancer Center (Oncology Center of Excellence of the German Cancer Aid), the NCT West and the partner site of the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK, ). There is a close connection with the University of Cologne and the University Hospital Cologne as well as the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg (DKFZ, ) as the other joint sponsors of the NCT West (). The NCT professorship is assigned to a DKFZ research program and the data science cross-section program (). We are looking for an internationally recognized scientist with outstanding expertise in developing and applying state-of-the-art machine learning and artificial intelligence methods in medicine. The successful candidate is expected to apply these newly developed methods to unique existing multimodal data obtained from clinical care () and science in order to develop novel methods for the diagnosis, therapy and understanding of oncological diseases. In addition to scientific excellence, the ability to communicate and collaborate with clinical partners and other scientific institutions nationally and internationally is of great importance. The professorship is expected to lead the development and integration of medical data sciences in oncology across all NCT sites for easy access and ethical use by next generation data scientists. The professor will also develop and validate AI/machine learning-based tools for the NCT‘s data-informed academic trial portfolio. The successful candidate is expected to manage the team in a responsible economic, goal- and employee-oriented manner, and to provide an inclusive work environment by taking active steps to achieve equity and attract, develop and promote people from diverse backgrounds. The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Duisburg-Essen is internationally renowned for its clinical, translational, and basic research. Key research areas include „Cardiovascular Diseases“, „Immunology and Infectiology“, „Oncology“, „Translational Neuroand Behavioral Sciences“, and „Transplantation“. The advertised professorship is assigned to the research focus on oncology. Publications in high-ranking, peer-reviewed journals are expected, as well as experience commensurate with professional experience in the implementation of self-acquired competitively reviewed third-party projects, preferably in programs funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the European Research Council (ERC) or international funding organisations. The University of Duisburg-Essen attaches particular importance to the quality of teaching. Didactic ideas on teaching – also taking into account the profile of the University of Duisburg-Essen – must be presented. An active contribution to the NCT School of Clinical Cancer Research is also expected. The recruitment requirements are based on Section 36 of the NRW Higher Education Act.and the DKFZ statutes. The joint appointment will follow the “Jülicher Modell”, where the successful candidate will be appointed as a full and lifetime professor at University Duisburg-Essen and then, granted a leave of absence to the DKFZ, which will be the employer.
