Postdoc Scientist (f/m/d) in Physics Reference No.: WI 2024/13 The Undulator Group at HZB is in charge of the design, construction, installation and operation of permanent magnet insertion devices at BESSY II storage ring and its future successor. Meeting the user demands in terms of spectral properties and polarization with means of high performance insertion devices, while avoiding the undesired impact of the magnetic structures on the electron beam, is the mission of the group. In order to take full advantage of the novel concepts and advanced developments in storage ring design, the corresponding insertion devices have to be developed further as well. Moreover, novel undulator schemes and improved insertion-device performance trigger new schemes and advanced upgrades for synchrotron light sources. Thus, the Undulator Group and its environment provide exciting opportunities for research. The Undulator Group is seeking a physicist to contribute to the theoretical / numerical and physics aspects of the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of permanent magnet insertion devices (IDs) at HZB. Your Tasks Development of software that links different codes in order to enable comprehensive radiation simulation from the source to experiment, incorporating modern software development practices principles (revision control, testing, continuous integration and deployment) Support of software development for undulator design and construction Contribution to the calculations of synchrotron radiation and spectral performance of conventional and novel undulator systems Contribution to the design of undulators for BESSY II, and the future BESSY III and MLS II machines Support and development of modern data storage protocols following FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) principles Publication of scientific and technical results Your Profile As our ideal candidate, you have a demonstrated enthusiasm in one or more of the fields of electromagnetic modelling, accelerator physics and the calculation of synchrotron radiation. Experience in these fields and an interest in software development good practice would be advantageous. The essential requirements for this position are: PhD in physics or a related discipline is required Knowledge of Python or Fortran programming languages Oral and written communication skills in English or German to at least B2/C1 level Ability to interact with students, staff and facility users at all levels and to work in a multidisciplinary team Ability to work on own initiative and take projects to completion An enthusiasm for physics, and a driving curiosity to discover new and improved methods for undulator design The desirable qualities that would be advantageous in this application are: Experience with modern software development principles such as revision control, testing, continuous integration and deployment Knowledge of FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) data storage principles Experience of computer codes for synchrotron radiation Knowledge of synchrotron radiation or accelerator physics Experience of computer codes for the calculation of synchrotron radiation or particle accelerators Experience in the operation of particle accelerator systems Experience with Windows and Linux computer systems and in depth knowledge of Fortran and Python programming languages Your Benefits at HZB Opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future in cooperation with leading international researchers Commitment to diversity and sustainability through an inclusive working environment, promotion of diversity sensitivity andimplementation of sustainable and climate-neutral methods Career-enhancing networking opportunities and individual mentoring and support from theHZB Graduate Centre andHZB Postdoc Office Attractive remuneration through payment according to TVöD Bund 30 days holiday/year Extensive additional benefits, such as company pension plan (VBL), subsidy for public transport (Deutschlandticket Job) and company sports programs Good work-life-balance through counselling services on family and career and flexible working time models: Flextime, part-time, hybrid working And a team that is looking forward to meeting you Fixed term contract for 12 months.
