Postdoc (f/m/d) in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a Related Discipline for In Situ Investigations of Stability of Electrocatalyst Materials Reference No.: CE 2024/20 The Dynamic Electrocatalytic Interfaces Group works in close cooperation with the Helmholtz-Institut Erlangen-Nürnberg für Erneuerbare Energien (HI ERN) and the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) and is located in Erlangen. We develop understanding of the chemical processes ongoing at complex and dynamic interfaces, with a special focus on electrocatalysis for energy conversion and storage, aiming to overcome stability and efficiency limits. The scope of methods includes a variety of physical vapor deposition techniques, advanced electrochemical characterization methods, atom probe tomography and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy including synchrotron based methods. As a postdoctoral researcher in our group, you will be responsible for development of the methods comprising electrochemistry and analytics for is situ monitoring of stability of electrocatalyst materials and mechanisms of electrochemical reactions. In collaboration with several partner groups, you will explore the structure – functional relationships in the state-of-the-art catalysts for hydrogen production and electrosynthesis of valuable chemicals. Your work place will be at the HI ERN in Erlangen. Your Tasks * Investigation of structure – functional relationships in model electrocatalyst materials * Characterization of the electrocatalysts by methods used in materials science * Development of electrochemical cells for in situ characterization * Coupling of electrochemical methods and analytics for quantitative analysis of the reaction products * Presentation of your results at project meetings, national and international conferences and publication in scientific journals and reports Your Profile * Doctoral degree / PhD in electrochemistry or corrosion science * Completed master’s degree or diploma in chemistry, physics, materials science, or comparable fields * Good knowledge of scientific measurement and analysis techniques, experience in method development * Excellent knowledge of electrochemistry * Practical experience with analysis methods such as mass spectrometry and or chromatography * Good publication record * Excellent English and German skills Your Benefits at HZB * The opportunity to develop new materials for energy conversion and storage * State-of-the-art labs and infrastructure for electrocatalysis research * Integration into specific national and international projects, close collaboration with researchers from HI ERN, FZJ and FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg * A growing, highly motivated group with a pleasant atmosphere, a supportive environment, and regular social activities * Networking at national and international conferences * Attractive fringe benefits, including a company pension scheme (Versorgungsanstalt des Bundes und der Länder, VBL) * A wide range of training programmes * 39 hours/week * 30 days holiday * Work-life balance through flexible working hours and an internal counselling centre for these concerns * Extensive counselling services on family and career planning * Health management and company sports programmes * Subsidy for public transport (Deutschlandticket Job) * And a team that looks forward to meeting you! Fixed term contract for 24 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund). How to apply You work place will be in Erlangen.
