Postdoc (f/m/d) in the Field of Physics, Engineering or Equivalent for Ultrafast, Coherent X-ray Beamline Development and Application Reference No.: PS 2024/16 The Institute for Electronic Structure Dynamics develops spectroscopic methods that allow real-time and/or site-specific investigations of condensed-phase physicochemical transformations. The Liquid & Interfacial Dynamics with Ultrafast X-rays (LIDUX) laser laboratory is currently being put into operation and will be used to investigate chemical changes in the liquid phase and at interfaces, element specifically and on their natural, femtosecond timescale. The focus of the laboratory will be on understanding (bio-)chemical processes in aqueous solutions and the activity of catalysts and functional materials in their natural or applied environments. The LIDUX laboratory is built around a state-of-the-art, kW-level, ultrashort pulse laser system. An associated, exceptionally high-power (>50 W), few-optical-cycle pulse duration, short-wave infrared laser system and gas-phase high-harmonic generation are already being implemented to generate high-flux, ultrashort soft X-ray pulses. As a postdoc in our team, you will join our efforts in leveraging this femtosecond-pulse-duration, coherent X-ray source using the novel vacuum beamline and spectrometers systems, which are already under construction. Your role will be to commission a new X-ray beamline, perform X-ray beam coherence measurements, and assist in bringing associated endstations into operation, before applying them in pioneering, femtosecond time-resolution experiments. Are you interested in joining our team in these endeavors? If so, we are looking forward to receiving your application. Your Tasks * You will construct and commission a HHG-based vacuum beamline system for femtosecond-duration X-ray laser pulses. * You will collaborate with experts in the Department for Optics & Beamlines at HZB to measure the coherence properties of HHG-based X-ray sources and the outputs of state-of-the-art X-ray optical elements. * You will work collaboratively in bringing the LIDUX beam diagnostics and spectrometer systems into operation. * You will perform femtosecond time-resolved X-ray experiments with the developed infrastructures. * You will communicate your results at research conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. Your Profile * Completed doctoral degree in physics, engineering or equivalent * Demonstrable experience with the commissioning and operation of extreme ultraviolet and/or soft X-ray vacuum beamlines * Proven experience with extreme ultraviolet and/or soft X-ray spectroscopy techniques * At least three years of practical experience in laboratory or accelerator-based light-source environments * Experience in publishing scientific results * Ability to work in a team and with a high level of self-reliance * Excellent command of English (B2 level or above) Experience with femtosecond laser systems, nonlinear optical processes, ultrafast time resolution experiments, and programming in Python are also desirable. Your Benefits at HZB * Opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future in cooperation with leading international researchers * Commitment to diversity and sustainability through an inclusive working environment, promotion of diversity sensitivity and implementation of sustainable and climate-neutral methods * Career-enhancing networking opportunities and individual mentoring and support from the HZB Graduate Centre and HZB Postdoc Office * Attractive remuneration through payment according to TVöD Bund * 30 days holiday/year * Extensive additional benefits, such as company pension plan (VBL), subsidy for public transport (Deutschlandticket Job) and company sports programs * Good work-life balance through counselling services on family and career and flexible working time models: Flextime, part-time, hybrid working * And a team that is looking forward to meeting you! Fixed term contract for 24 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund). How to apply We look forward to receiving your application via our application management system by23.02.2025.
