The Subsurface Corporate Director will oversee all subsurface activities for the Group's portfolio, spanning the entire value chain from exploration to mature field management.
Operating at the corporate level, this role is pivotal in establishing and enforcing technical standards, driving collaboration across disciplines, and ensuring the highest quality of technical deliverables. The Subsurface Director will also act as the Ultimate Technical Authority, providing strategic oversight and technical expertise to guide subsurface operations and activities.
Additionally, the Subsurface Manager will be responsible for managing and coordinating with third-party companies performing subsurface studies and other related activities, ensuring alignment with the company's objectives and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Oversight and Leadership
1. Act as the Ultimate Technical Authority for subsurface activities, setting and upholding corporate technical standards across all company assets.
2. Oversee geoscience and reservoir engineering workflows, ensuring integration of subsurface studies into operational and strategic decisions.
3. Provide guidance on exploration, appraisal, development, and production optimization strategies.
Subsurface Studies and Standards
1. Lead the development and review of static and dynamic reservoir models to support asset evaluation and decision-making.
2. Standardize methodologies for reservoir characterization, performance forecasting, and uncertainty management.
3. Establish corporate protocols for subsurface data acquisition, management, and analysis.
4. Manage relationships with third-party companies performing subsurface studies, ensuring quality control, compliance with corporate standards, and timely delivery of results.
Portfolio Management
1. Support exploration evaluations, including conceptual development plans and near-field prospect assessments.
2. Oversee the appraisal of mature assets to inform Final Investment Decisions (FID) and plan next-phase developments.
3. Develop and maintain an opportunity list for near-field prospects, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
Reservoir Performance and Reserves Reporting
1. Monitor reservoir and well performance across the asset portfolio, identifying opportunities for improvement and mitigating risks.
2. Coordinate annual reserve reporting activities, ensuring compliance with internal and external audit requirements.
3. Present production forecasts, reserve progressions, and technical recommendations to senior management, partners, and government stakeholders.
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
1. Act as the primary interface with internal teams, JV partners, government entities, and third-party vendors on subsurface matters.
2. Represent the company in technical committees, data rooms, and partner meetings.
3. Prepare and deliver high-quality technical presentations and reports.
Third-Party Management
1. Evaluate and select third-party companies for subsurface studies and related services.
2. Manage contracts, budgets, and deliverables for third-party engagements.
3. Ensure third-party work aligns with the company’s technical and strategic objectives.
4. Conduct regular reviews of third-party deliverables, providing feedback and ensuring continuous improvement.
Team Development and Collaboration
1. Lead a multi-disciplinary team of geoscientists and reservoir engineers, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
2. Support the professional development of team members through mentoring, training, and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications and Experience
1. Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering, Geoscience, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
2. Minimum of 20 years of experience in subsurface disciplines, with at least 10 years in a leadership role.
3. Proven track record in exploration, appraisal, and development planning in diverse reservoir settings.
4. Expertise in reservoir simulation (ECLIPSE, Petrel, or equivalent), production forecasting, and reserves reporting.
5. Strong understanding of geoscience workflows and reservoir engineering principles.
6. Experience in managing subsurface teams and third-party vendors within a matrix organization.
