The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), are calling for applications from young women scientists working on infection biology to conduct a short-term research project at EMBL during 2025. They will work under the mentorship and supervision of an EMBL group leader on a project imparting technical skills aligned with ongoing research in the group. This "EMBL-UNESCO Residency in Infection Biology Research'' is funded by EMBL’s Infection Biology Transversal Theme (IB-TT)– a focus area within EMBL’s current five year programme “Molecules to Ecosystems”. This initiative closely follows the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)signed between EMBL(1) and UNESCO(2) to promote greater collaboration in the areas of open science, capacity building in developing countries, the sharing of key resources, and the promotion of greater gender equality in science. This call will be accepting applications between 11 February - 31 March 2025, and aims to support 3-4 visitors at EMBL this year. The results should be announced in late May/early June 2025 and the placements are expected to start by September 2025, lasting up to 3 months. EMBL will provide financial and logistic support to the successful candidates through the Scientific Visitor Programme Office, covering the costs for visa, travel and accommodation for the duration of their stay, in partnership with site administrators. For further information on the fellowship, research groups of the IB-TT, timelines, and how to apply, please visit the EMBL UNESCO residency fellowship website. Please make sure to read the guidelines carefully. 1 EMBL is among the world’s highest ranked scientific research organisations aimed to explore the secrets of life. EMBL integrates 27 member states and employs close to 1800 people across its six research sites in Heidelberg, Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg, Cambridge (Hinxton) and Rome. Its headquarters is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and integrate both research groups and core facilities. The IB-TT research groups, spread across all 6 sites, are focused on characterising pathogen (viruses, bacteria, parasites) interactions with the host at an atomic, molecular, tissue and ecosystems level to better understand infection and antimicrobial resistance – a major health challenge facing the world today. 2 UNESCO is the main agency within the United Nations that aims to promote global peace and security, through the promotion of international cooperation in education, sciences, culture, communication and information. UNESCO works with science organisations to share ideas and establish standards, promote dialogue between scientists and policy makers, and enable the development of deeper international cooperation in science. Your role The successful candidate(s) will be hosted by one or more group leaders within the Infection Biology Transversal Theme, spread across EMBL’s six sites in Europe - who will mentor and co-develop the project proposed by the candidate, in line with the group’s research focus. You have The current opportunity targets women who are advanced PhD fellows, postdoctoral scholars, or tenure-track group leaders ( Applications are especially welcomed from eligible female candidates among the fellows of the UNESCO’s Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), and the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science (FWIS) awardees, who have demonstrated research excellence, and intend to use this placement opportunity to simultaneously expand their research program and contribute to capacity building in their home institution/region/country. You may also have Special attention will also be given during the interview to the candidate’s potential to translate their experience at EMBL into a positive contribution to capacity building projects in their home country.
