The EMBL Chemical Synthesis Core Facility (CSCF) is a service-oriented team specializing in small-molecule synthesis. Our goal is to assist research groups that lack expertise or infrastructure in chemical synthesis by offering consultation, design, synthesis, and characterization of small-molecule tool compounds for various biological applications. Located in Heidelberg, our facility is looking for a highly qualified and motivated postdoctoral fellow with a strong background in synthetic chemistry. The role involves working on multiple diverse projects, typically lasting 2-3 months, with some extending further. The main responsibility is to design, synthesize and characterize compounds of interest, and document experimental data for presentations and publications. The ideal candidate should go beyond executing project requirements by developing original ideas and presenting innovative strategies. The fellow should take initiative in identifying new opportunities, contributing fresh insights to discussions, and advancing projects beyond their initial scope in collaboration with partners. Your role Design, conduct and optimize multi-step syntheses based on project requirements. Maintain precise records of procedures and results following laboratory guidelines. Contribute to conceptual planning and monitoring of project progress. Proactively research scientific literature, generate innovative ideas, and propose new approaches to enhance project outcomes. Supervise and mentor students working in the lab. Assist in maintaining lab infrastructure and equipment. You have Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry. Strong experimental expertise in organic synthesis. Experience with a wide range of synthetic chemistry techniques. Proficiency in analytical methods such as NMR, HPLC, and mass spectrometry. Excellent problem-solving abilities and multitasking skills. Capability to work independently. Strong presentation and communication skills in interdisciplinary teams. Fluency in English. You may also have Expertise in chemical biology and medicinal chemistry. Basic knowledge in oligonucleotide chemistry. Contract length: 2 years, start date as early as July 2025 with some flexibility to be discussed with supervisor.
