Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering is an online-only journal that covers the breadth and depth of modern electrical engineering by publishing timely and accessible top-quality Reviews, Perspectives and Comments encompassing every aspect of power, electronics, photonics, robotics, signal processing and telecommunication engineering. The mission of the journal is to provide constructive intellectual and inclusive dialogue between scientists, engineers and industry through credible, broad-scope content on the latest developments in emerging and cutting-edge technologies as well as transfer and translation of various engineering solutions into real-world applications. In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the journal strives to emphasize the key role of electrical engineering in tackling poverty and climate change, reducing inequality and providing strategies for improved health, education all while stimulating economic growth. Additionally, the journal aims to serve as a diverse and inclusive platform for discussing commercial, ethical, legal and societal aspects of electrical engineering.
The scope of the journal includes but is not limited to advances in semiconductor devices and nanoelectronics, power and energy systems, wireless and optical communications, robotics and automation, sensing and imaging technologies, and emerging computing paradigms, with a focus on cutting-edge research shaping the future of electrical engineering.
This role can be in our Berlin and Shanghai offices on a hybrid working model.
Role Responsibilities:
* Recruit, train, manage and motivate editorial staff to develop a cohesive team working to agreed editorial and publishing objectives.
* Manage a team and work closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
* Plan, review and manage the proposed content of the journal to ensure the highest standards of commissioning, editing and writing, and a clear focus on the professional needs of the readership.
* Ensure targets and deadlines are met and the journal’s editorial strategy is clearly set.
* Work closely with authors throughout the writing and revision process, providing feedback on synopses, developing ideas for figures and other display items, and annotating referees’ comments.
* Maintain excellent subject area knowledge and keep abreast of developments across the entire journal’s scope.
* Propose and execute, or contribute to, journal-specific, cross-journal and other special projects e.g., Nature Conferences.
* Feedback from conferences attended and circulate commissioning ideas in timely manner.
* Mentor staff, participate in induction program for new staff, take responsibility for an aspect of best working practice for the whole Nature Reviews team.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
* Broad knowledge of electrical engineering and the expertise to commission high-quality papers spanning the journal’s scope.
* A PhD (or equivalent) in related science field.
* A strong research background.
* Excellent literary and verbal communication skills.
* A commitment to the communication of scientific ideas.
* Willingness to travel to international conferences and network.
* A positive attitude to change.

Please also submit 10 commissioning ideas and a vision statement for the journal (1500 to 2000 words). The vision statement should outline the key objectives for the journal and should include an overall journal strategy (commenting on, for example, key areas for commissioning, areas where coverage could be decreased or increased, how to make best use of the front-half of the journal, how to maximize networking, how to improve author and referee services and how to build a journal voice).
