Glycosphingolipids are well known to have a number of essential biological activities. Numerous in vitro, in vivo and human clinical trials showed the product potentials of glycosphingolipids in many different application fields such as nutritional (anti-infective effect, immune system modulating, brain- and cognitive development enhancing), cosmetic (anti aging, skin energy booster, promotion of hair growth, balancing skin microbiota) and pharmaceutical industries (treatment of Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease).
However, the synthetic challenges due to their complex structure and the lack of natural source of human identical glycosphingolipids prevented their market introduction so far.
