The Head of R&D Computational Research oversees all computational research activities within the Research & Development (R&D) organization and provides leadership to the computational research organization within R&D. He/She is responsible for driving innovation, leading cutting-edge research projects, and overseeing the development, validation, and deployment of advanced computational models, methodologies, and solutions.
The role is also responsible for driving computational strategies, managing a team of computational scientists, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to accelerate our research and development efforts. The role is a member of the R&D Leadership Team (R&D LT).
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Develops and implements the strategic vision for the R&D Computational Research team and associated federated Computational Research groups in R&D.
2. Provides leadership and mentorship to a team of computational researchers and engineers.
3. Collaborates with senior management to align R&D initiatives with the company's overall goals and objectives.
4. Drives the identification and development of new computational research projects and initiatives in close collaboration with the different Research & Development Therapeutic Areas, Technology, and the Data & Digital Organization.
5. Oversees the design, development, and optimization of computational models, methods & solutions.
6. Leads and manages multiple research projects simultaneously, ensuring timely and successful completion.
7. Allocates resources effectively, manages project budgets, and coordinates with cross-functional teams.
8. Ensures compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
9. Fosters a collaborative environment across the Computational Research teams in the R&D organization and with other departments.
10. Creates a technical environment that allows the sharing of ideas and solutions between the different parts of the R&D organization, fostering continuous innovation in the field of Computational Research.
11. Presents research findings and progress updates to stakeholders, including senior management and external partners.
12. Publishes research results in scientific journals and presents at industry conferences.
13. Develops, validates, and deploys internal and external computational approaches to deliver solutions and answers to complex problems in the field of infectious diseases, molecular therapeutics, oncology, mRNA design & delivery (technology), vaccine design, and clinical evaluation.
14. Utilizes software development skills to create and maintain computational tools, platforms, and pipelines.
15. Ensures the accuracy, reliability, and scalability of computational solutions.
16. Ensures a data-driven mindset with a high degree of qualitative data usage.
Qualifications:
1. Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Computational Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.
2. Minimum of 10 years of experience in computational research, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
3. Proven track record of successful research projects and publications in reputable scientific journals.
4. Experience in managing and leading high-performing research teams.
5. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, C, or similar.
6. Strong knowledge of computational methods, data analysis, and machine learning techniques.
7. Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) and cloud-based computational environments.
8. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
9. Strong problem-solving abilities and a results-oriented mindset.
10. Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and fast-paced environment.
