Our Applied Science team for Performance Measurement collaborates with product management, engineering and analytics to innovate our best-in-industry performance marketing engine, primarily focusing on systems to measure the incremental value of marketing activities. The Senior Applied Scientist role is critical for optimising our 9-figure marketing investments on platforms like Google and Meta, as you help to accurately and continuously measure and attribute the incremental return of every Euro spent. Your contributions will improve key components of marketing measurement models we apply for marketing campaign attribution and their calibration to accurately mirror the incremental performance of marketing investments, and the continuous generation of incremental insights via controlled experiments, causal inference and machine learning. WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING) We are looking for a strong highly-technical fast-learner problem solver to work on complex problems of measurement and steering within performance marketing at Zalando. You will join a team of Applied Scientists working on Measuring the impact of marketing through the entire marketing funnel Optimizing the efficiency of the investment of performance marketing. Optimizing the steering of marketing investment at Zalando to make sure we meet profitability targets. Developing solutions that optimize the marketing investments at product level. To address those problems, the team uses: Complex A/B testing set-up Causal inference Classical ML modelling on tabular data / Time series forecasting A lot of data exploration and analysis We thrive in a highly complex, data-rich environment that demands deep technical expertise and advanced coding skills. WE'D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF We’re looking for proficiency in the following areas in order to succeed in this role Strong academic background in machine learning, economics, or artificial intelligence, accompanied by 2 years of industry experience. Proven track record of independently tackling concrete research problems and autonomously finding a path to a simple and fast solution, before iteration. Track record of owning the technical development of ML products from design to deployment. Advanced coding skills in Python as well as experience with common big data processing and manipulation tools such as PySpark and SQL. Experience in reviewing the code of others and improving the coding culture within a team. Experience in supervising more junior colleagues, as well as organising learning. Good communication skills to translate (even complex) analytical / engineering decisions and outcomes to both peers and a broader, non-technical audience. Good to have: MLops experience: deploying models to production, writing unit/integration tests, and documentation. Experience with Airflow, MLFlow. Bonus: experience setting up an ML solution in a real-time environment. Experience in designing scalable and maintainable ML solutions. Experience in A/B testing in a complex setup. Applications of causal inference to industry problems. Ability to navigate a complex data environment and to identify relevant data for a product.
