The research group "Optical Metro, Access and In-House Networks" (MAI) in the Department of Photonic Networks and Systems is looking for a scientist for research and development tasks within the framework of the BMBF collaborative project "Passive Optical Networks of the Next Generation (PONGO)" in collaboration with partners from industry and research. What you will do
* Research and development in the field of optical communication technology with a focus on digital signal transmission and processing in optical access networks
* Investigation and development of methods for efficient signal transmission and synchronization in optical communication networks
* Conduct experiments and supporting numerical studies
* Presentation of R&D results in the form of project reports, presentations, and journal contributions
* Supervision of master's and bachelor's theses
The scientific work offers the opportunity for a doctorate.
What you bring to the table
* Completed scientific university degree in electrical engineering, communications engineering, or related fields
* Very good knowledge of optical communication technology
* Experience in characterizing and modeling optical communication systems
* Experience in programming with MATLAB and/or Python
* Experience with software development and version control software such as GitLab
* Fluent in English, both written and spoken
* Team player with a structured working approach and the ability to independently develop ideas for new research activities
Desirable:
* Experience in laboratory work, for example as a student assistant
* Experience in the combination of signal transmission and sensor technology
* Knowledge of DSP algorithms for digital coherent transmission
* Familiarity with VPIphotonics / VPItransmissionMaker

The position is initially limited to 2 years. An extension is explicitly desired.
The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis.
