AG Landgraf works at the interface between biology and computer science to study the collective intelligence of model organisms (bees and fish). To better understand how interactions within a group lead to emergent group behaviors, we develop modern tools such as tracking systems, biomimetic robots and interpretable machine learning models. In a new research project with our partner Bayer Crop Science, we will investigate the impact of pesticides on individual bees and the collective behavior of a bee colony. Using our tracking system “Beesbook” we will follow individual bees throughout their lifetimes and study the collective effect of pesticide treatments.
Job description :
We seek a highly motivated candidate with a background in computer science or engineering to join our interdisciplinary team. You will design and conduct experiments, refine hardware and software setups, and develop computational models for advanced behavioral analyses. This role offers an exciting opportunity to blend experimental and computational research in pursuit of novel insights into honey bee behavior.
Key Responsibilities
• Data Acquisition & Analysis: Operate and refine the BeesBook tracking system for high-resolution behavioral data. Manage hardware (cameras, sensors) and software pipelines for continuous monitoring.
• Computational Modeling: Develop and apply statistical or machine learning models (in Python or similar) to detect, quantify, and interpret behavior
• Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with collaborators at and outside FU Berlin. Present findings at internal meetings, conferences, and in peer-reviewed journals.
• Laboratory & Field Work: Assist in maintenance of honey bee colonies and associated experimental tasks
Requirements :
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.
Desirable :
- Technical Skills.
- programming experience (Python preferred), data analysis, and machine learning frameworks. Familiarity with Linux and HPC systems is a plus.
- prior work with insects or animal behavior is beneficial but not required.
- Language: Proficiency in English is essential (C1)l; German is helpful but not mandatory.
- knowledge of gender and diversity
