Context: Traditional control loop applications are typically centralized, which can lead to latency issues and single points of failure. Modern programmable networks, leveraging technologies like P4, offer the potential to distribute these applications across network elements. This thesis explores breaking up control loop applications (such as PID controllers) and distributing them within the network infrastructure. By doing so, we aim to reduce latency, improve scalability, enhance fault tolerance, and potentially enable new control paradigms that were previously impractical with centralized approaches. The primary objectives of this thesis are to: Develop a framework for decomposing various types of control loop applications into distributable P4 components Implement theses P4 components across a P4 programmable network Evaluate the performance and scalability of distributed in-network control loops compared to centralized approaches Use your skills to move the world forward. Current Master’s degree student in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering, or a related field Strong interest in control systems and networking programming Solid understanding of control theory and networking concepts Programming skills in P4, C (for DPDK development), or Rust are advantageous Ability to work independently and as part of a team Make your mark in our exciting world at Siemens. www.siemens.de if you wish to find out more about Siemens before applying.
