Through WBR’s 501(c)3, we provide transport solutions to those who cannot afford them, and through Buffalo Bicycle Limited, we sell the rugged Buffalo Bicycle and spare parts. Buffalo Bicycle Limited also offers users repair and maintenance services via a retail network of shops and local mechanics. WBR has distributed over 780,000 fit-for-purpose bicycles and trained 2,500 community-based mechanics. Girls with Buffalo Bicycles are 19% less likely to drop out of school; dairy farmers earn 23% more income, and health workers reach 88% more patients. Purpose of the Position The Senior Design Engineer will create designs for new bicycles and new bicycle components that help our customers get where they need to go, cover more distance in less time, and carry more load with less effort. They will further the mission of World Bicycle Relief by ensuring that our new products solve our customer’s mobility problems and can be produced cost effectively in high volumes. Job Responsibilities: Leads product development design work within our team. Designs, builds, and analyzes structural components of bicycles using various materials. Ideates and develops WBR’s intellectual property for new product concepts, solutions, and patentable technologies. Collaborates with WBR’s Global Product Development team, leveraging data analysis to understand customer needs and identify new opportunities and concepts through observation, inference, experimentation, and problem solving. Designs, constructs, and evaluates working prototypes for new product concepts. Designs product experiments and develop lab-based and field-based tests to identify design problems and verify design decisions. Creates detailed design specifications including CAD models, component and assembly drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis. Collaborates with process engineers in Asia to identify cost-effective manufacturing processes that support the development of new and better products. Requirements Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with 8 years of professional mechanical design experience. A high degree of mechanical aptitude with an ability to understand mechanical systems and part interactions. Detailed knowledge and practical experience of a wide variety of manufacturing processes and practices. Understands how manufacturing methods impact product design. Fluent English with exceptional communication and strong appreciation for the value of feedback and group discussion. Experienced with practical, hands-on design methods including sketching, making, fabricating, prototyping, and testing. Experience in applying a variety of engineering tools such as CAD, GD&T, tolerance analysis and stress calculation. Experience with metal forming processes such as forging, stamping, heat treatment and machining is preferred. Experience collaborating with global teams a plus. Working Conditions Office based at 100% level of effort Up to 4 weeks international travel per year to any of our locations in Asia, Africa, or South America.
