CAES Ahaus – Project Vision:
Our vision for the CAES Ahaus project is to develop a commercial-scale, long duration energy storage facility that utilises innovative technology to accelerate Germany’s energy transition and benefit the local community.
Role Description
Corre Energy - with locations in Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, UK and Ireland - is looking for a Senior Process Engineer who is experienced in the process technologies applied in innovative CAES (Compressed Air Energy Storage) storage power plants.
Responsibilities
1. Lead all process engineering aspects in the development of the multi-hundred MW-scale CAES project “Speicherkraftwerk CAES Ahaus” up to FID with the potential to continue in role through the construction and commissioning phase until COD.
2. Process calculations (design, hydraulics, heat and mass flows) according to German standards.
3. Lead preparation of technical design documents, e.g. Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), process simulations, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (PIDs), process datasheets, hydraulic design, lists and concepts for layout and civil guild drawings, plant descriptions, control philosophy, operational manual.
4. Review and approve supplier design documents and specifications to ensure they meet standards and are in compliance with project requirements.
5. Manage design changes and ensure they are justified and documented.
6. During procurement / bid evaluations phase provide technical support in the selection of process equipment & materials and in the evaluation of bids & vendor proposals.
7. Close alignment with other engineering disciplines including electrical, mechanical, geological, civil, control systems engineering and commercial and permitting experts and consultants.
8. Support with your process engineering expertise the continuous improvement of technical cost estimates for the project (DEVEX, CAPEX, OPEX) and give your expert inputs to business case assumptions around plant efficiency and equipment durability.
9. Support the integration of subsurface and surface plant units of an innovative large scale CAES plant that consists of multi-stage air compression systems, cooling and/or heat storage systems, air-expansion units with a potentially hydrogen fuelled gas turbine (D-CAES) or converted steam turbine (A-CAES), HV-equipment and grid connection and Balance of Plant.
10. Define the operating strategy i.e. hours of operation for various CAES components, loads, nominal operating conditions in a continuous techno-commercial plant optimisation process.
11. Together with the Technical Project Manager steer technical consultants as our process engineering lead to deliver the project up to FID.
12. Support effective planning of process engineering related activities required to deliver the project on time, cost and quality.
13. Identification and management of technical project risks and opportunities together with the Risk Manager and the engineering team colleagues.
14. Foster strong relationships with technical partners such as Siemens Energy, suppliers and other project stakeholders.
15. Occasional participation in work groups at BVES industry association representing Corre Energy on engineering topics including regulations interpretation & adaptation.
16. Participation in contract negotiations with suppliers and project partners. Steering process engineering and control system integration aspects in these negotiations.
17. Participation in preparing national German & European grant / subsidy applications for first of a kind industrial scale projects in energy storage.
18. Track record of successfully progressing innovative large scale energy development projects.
19. Willingness to work in a dynamic start-up / scale-up company environment.
Deliverables:
1. Process engineering & design progression during Concept, FEED and Detail Engineering phases of the CAES project in Ahaus.
2. Support DEVEX, CAPEX, OPEX, ABEX estimates for the CAES plant.
3. Safety certification of the CAES design and the operation of the CAES plant.
4. Technical inputs to Risk Register.
5. Interface Schedules & RACI Matrixes.
6. Schedule inputs for development & EPC phase.
7. Co-draft the operating and maintenance strategy for the CAES plant.
8. Technical chapters of future funding / subsidy applications on a German or European Level.
Qualifications:
1. Master degree in process engineering discipline and 10 years or more experience within power or chemical industry or related industrial project development.
2. Experience in leading/managing the process engineering during Concept, FEED and Detail Engineering phases.
3. Experience working in a small & cross-functional engineering project team.
4. Experience with air compressors, gas turbines, steam turbines, power generators, heat exchangers, heat storage units and industrial plant control systems (SCADA).
We offer:
1. A multinational energy company which offers engineers an exciting and extremely varied working environment.
2. A varied and challenging role in a multinational team and a highly innovative, sustainable and down-to-earth company.
3. A meaningful job where all employees contribute to economically decarbonising the energy sector and reduce dependency on foreign energy imports.
4. Development and further training opportunities to shape and achieve your career goals.
5. Team spirit and a passion for innovative energy storage technologies.
6. Development and training opportunities.
7. Competitive and performance based remuneration.
Abbreviations:
CAES – Compressed Air Energy Storage. Storing energy by compressing air into a cavern in the ground when electricity is in low demand, and by releasing the air into a gas turbine expander, reheating it with hydrogen, and thus producing electricity when it is in high demand.
CAES Ahaus – a large scale CAES project under development in Ahaus, NRW,Germany.
CAPEX – Capital Expenditures, the investment in the detailed design, procurement and construction of the plant.
OPEX – Operational expenditures, the cost of operating the plant.
FID – Final Investment Decision. The milestone by which it is decided to go ahead with the large CAPEX commitments. Typically, it is also the time when permits, grid connection agreements and land acquisition are in place.
DEVEX – Development expenditures. The budget up the time when the project can be capitalised. Often up to FID, but sometimes before that time, if agreements with offtakers have been secured.
ABEX – Abandonment expenditures. The budget for when the plant has been taken out of service. Covers demolition and reinstatement of the used land.
TSO – Transmission system operator.
