Who we are ...
Our primary focuses at Fraunhofer IWES are on wind energy and hydrogen technologies. Our institute is home to more than 300 scientists and employees as well as over 100 students from over 30 countries pursuing careers in applied research and development at nine sites. We secure investments in technological developments through validation, shorten innovation cycles, accelerate certification procedures, and increase planning accuracy by means of innovative measurement methods.
This team is looking for you ...
You will join our »Geotechnical Engineering and Rock Physics« group at our site in Bremen, which is very closely involved in the »Sub-surface Investigations« department. We focus on the integration of geotechnical data and subsoil modeling, which enables informed decisions for the construction of offshore wind farms. At present, the team consists of three research associates and several students. We support each other irrespective of our projects and backgrounds. A culture of open exchange and cooperation, even beyond team boundaries and sites, are particularly important to us.
What you will do
These duties await you ...
You will work in various (international) research and industrial projects related to marine subsoil-subsurface modeling. You will be actively involved by evaluating and interpreting marine geophysical and geotechnical data sets. You will integrate the data and create complex subsoil models, using simulation and machine-learning methods for seismic attributes. You will also either use established seismic inversion methods and refine them or create new ones. Another of your tasks will be to develop a probabilistic subsoil model that integrates data from various sources in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the geological properties. Moreover, you will model statistically scattered and probabilistically distributed geological characteristics to better understand analytical uncertainties and make more accurate predictions.
No two days at work are ever the same!
Furthermore, you will support our colleagues in the planning of offshore geophysical measurement campaigns and participate yourself, where necessary (for a maximum of two weeks at a time) in order to be at the very heart of multichannel seismic data capture. You will also collaborate on the development of project applications and proposals. In addition, you will write publications and papers illustrating your work, and present your results at trade fairs and conferences.
What you bring to the table
What is your specialist background?
You should have completed your diploma or master’s degree in Marine Geosciences, Geophysics, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Mathematics. Have you already had the opportunity to put your experience of different types of marine geophysical and geotechnical data processing to the test in your everyday work? Has this provided you with an understanding of subsoil modeling? Great! Can you also apply statistics and probability theory in this context? Then you should definitely keep on reading!
Your profile is complemented by ...
Perhaps you already have some experience in offshore campaign planning? Are you already familiar with seismic inversion, which allows you to derive information about the subsurface properties from seismic data? Or perhaps you have already gained some experience in using the geotechnical offshore cone penetration test (CPT)? That would be great, but it is not a prerequisite. Here at IWES, we operate on an international level – a good command of German and English will make your day-to-day work easier.
What you can expect
How would you like to develop?
We support you on your professional journey. Whether personally, professionally, or methodically, we find the right qualification measures for you. It is also possible to be responsible for your own doctorate here. We offer you our full support! Do you want to immerse yourself in additional fields and work independently to drive new topics forward? With us, you get to shape your range of duties actively!
What we can offer you ...
When you are not offshore, our flextime and core time system offers you the freedom to structure the way you work and find time to enjoy your private life. Not sure who can look after your children in an emergency? We help by offering emergency childcare. Interested in employee discounts for events, clothes, vacations, etc.? With us, you can select from a varied range of offers and easily take advantage of them for yourself via an app. For sustainable mobility, you can also benefit from the Deutschland-Ticket as a job ticket.
We set store by diversity and equality!
Our open institute culture as well as mutual tolerance and respect ensure that every person feels comfortable with us from the start. We achieve this, for example, through our onboarding program for new employees as well as by raising awareness of and providing training on diversity and equal opportunity issues. We firmly believe that diversity is key to our success. Join us and experience this for yourself!
